Elaine Rosen, MD, FAAP
Dr. Rosen brings to California Center for Healthy Living fifteen years’ experience in our community as a general pediatrician, as well as a mountain of passion for bringing her longstanding vision of a comprehensive treatment center for overweight children to life.
A native of Houston, Texas, Dr. Rosen completed her undergraduate degree at Rice University and her medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. She then moved to Los Angeles, where she completed her residency in Pediatrics at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital. Following her training, she moved her home base to Tarzana, where she has been practicing since 1993. She has been heavily involved over the last several years with administrative work at Encino-Tarzana Regional Medical Center, having just served a three-year term as Vice Chief of Pediatrics, heading the Peer and Chart Review Committee.
Known as a comprehensive, thorough physician with a keen sensitivity for the psychological dynamics underneath the surface of her patients’ lives, Dr. Rosen has always known that her strengths lie more in the depth of her encounters with families rather than in seeing the volume of patients that is necessary as a general pediatrician.
For this reason, but most importantly because of the vast need she saw in the arena of pediatric weight management, Dr. Rosen has left her practice and is now pursuing this endeavor full time. The final piece to the puzzle is the experience she brings as a mother, having parented and fed three daughters and a son to their current ages of 8, 12, 14 and 16—together with her husband Lee.
Dr. Rosen is thrilled to see the fruition of what has been a ten-year vision, and is honored to be sharing the experience with a team of such exceptional professional colleagues.

Shani Verchick, R.D.
Shani received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and her Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition at California State University, Northridge. She is eligible to become a registered dietitian in July 2009.
Shani has a professional culinary certification from Westlake Culinary Institute and owned and operated a Los Angeles based bakery and catering company. She enjoys teaching culinary classes to both children and adults. She comes with a wealth of knowledge about creating and preparing healthy recipes and balanced meals for family’s to enjoy.
Shani is currently finishing her dietetic internship at the Los Angeles VA Healthcare System where she has had an opportunity to educate patients on healthy nutrition, utilizing medical nutrition therapy when necessary. She has volunteered her time in the nutrition department at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. She has taught nutrition classes at local elementary schools. She is thrilled to be able to combine her culinary background with dietetics and help inspire children, teens, and their parents to create healthy relationships to food and nutrition.

Lori Schur, RN, PhD
Dr. Schur is a licensed psychologist and registered nurse. She has over twenty years of experience in the treatment of eating disordered adolescents and adults in medical inpatient, residential and outpatient care settings. She has a private practice in Woodland Hills, California and serves as a consultant at The Bella Vita Treatment Center in Woodland Hills, CA. She is also on staff at Torrance Memorial Medical Center in Torrance, California where she is part of their treatment team for eating disordered patients who are medically compromised. In addition, she served as a consultant and educator in several local private and public schools. Dr. Schur received her PhD in counseling psychology and Masters Degree in educational psychology from the University of Southern California.

Julie Kantrowitz, MFT,
Julie has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from UCSD, a Masters of Science degree from the School of Public Health at UCLA and a Masters of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy from Phillips Graduate Institute. She brings both her education and her experiences as a wife and mother – she has three young adult children – to her Woodland Hills psychotherapy practice.
Julie works collaboratively with clients who have a broad range of issues and goals. Much of her practice involves assisting adolescents and young people in transition, but she also sees couples and families. Her areas of interest include grief and loss and parenting concerns. After being diagnosed with diabetes eight years ago, Julie works to help others manage their own chronic or acute medical problems, working towards creating balance in all aspects of their lives (emotional, social, and physical) while giving clients the tools to find appropriate levels of self-care and other-care. Julie also leads several groups devoted to the needs of new moms.
Julie’s past speaking engagements include discussions on various topics, from “The Emotional Roller Coaster of Managing Chronic Illness” to “How to Really Be There for Your Teen,” and “Coping with Stress in a Struggling Economy.”

Cindy Larson, NASM, NCCPT, JGSI
An activist for children’s fitness and family well being, Cindy Larson has spent 15 years as a personal trainer and educator teaching women how to take care of their bodies through exercise, and in turn, model healthy fitness for their families. The Family Fitness Path is born out of a commitment to helping parents, educators and children find concrete and doable solutions in our struggle against obesity.
A professional dancer and competitive swimmer, Cindy has seen fitness trends come and go. Cindy has learned that the path to success lies in simplicity and flexibility. Marrying her professional experience with her National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) license has driven Cindy to share her vision for health with her clients and the public. In 1992 Cindy loaned her talents to Kathy Smith in a series of fitness videos. Because of her expertise, Cindy has appeared on local and national television shows, including ABC’s The Home Show.
Cindy lives in Los Angeles with her husband Doug, and is the owner of Studio B, a unique boutique gym tailored to women. When not working with her clients, Cindy is busy raising her two very active sons. Cindy still hits it hard, mountain biking with her family in the hills of the San Fernando Valley.

Michael Toussaint
Michael has been a certified personal fitness trainer and gym owner and for about 15 years. He opened Gym Spot because he wanted to take the personal training gym to the next level. The full service health and fitness gym in Tarzana has more than 20 certified personal fitness trainers. Gym Spot offers a high level environment in which clients become fit and toned…as well as adjunct services of massage and beauty treatments.
Michael trains people from all walks of life; however, he specializes in the extreme ends of the fitness spectrum. He helps many high-level athletes to improve their overall performance in competition. He also assists in the rehabilitation of handicapped and elderly clients. Michael’s fitness mission also includes helping overweight clients of all ages to set realistic, healthy goals while increasing their functional strength and endurance.

Mark Harari
Originally from Dallas, Texas, Mark Harari has been training personal clients and instructing group classes for over ten years. He coaches his clients to tone and strengthen their bodies through a myriad of fun, intense, and creative workouts. Energy, variation, and positive motivation are all key elements to Mark’s approach to exercise. Mark is an AFAA certified trainer, and owner of Pulse Fitness Studios in Sherman Oaks. |

Cheryl Ecker, MA, OTR/L, BCP, SWC
Cheryl is a national board certified pediatric occupational therapist. She has also acquired specialty certification for feeding and swallowing through the California Board of Occupational Therapy. She has been practicing in occupational therapy with specialization in sensory integration and feeding for almost 20 years.

Marcie Howard
Marcie Howard joins California Center for Health Living as Office Manager.
She received her BA in English from UC Santa Barbara, and worked in advertising for over ten years. She then transferred her skill set to the volunteer world, and became a leader at her children’s schools as well as throughout the broader community.
Marcie brings to the CCHL team years of experience in organization, multi-tasking and working with others; as well as the sensitivity born of raising three children. With the responsibilities of carpooling, household duties, fulfilling volunteer commitments, and making time for herself, Marcie understands the challenges, and lives the life, of today’s parent.
She is excited to combine all her skills and experience in helping run the office for California Center of Healthy Living. Marcie looks forward to meeting you!
FOR ALL FAMILIES OTHER THAN THOSE WITH EATING DISORDERS:
A call to our Intake Coordinator starts the process. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions not answered by our website.
COME ON IN!
You will then be scheduled for the intake process, which usually occurs over two visits. Prior to the intake process, teens and/or parents will be asked to fill out and submit questionnaires, downloadable through this website (For Teens and For Parents). Pediatricians will be contacted for growth charts and other medically relevant health data.
INTAKE PROCESS:
The INTAKE consists of two one-hour visits with Dr. Rosen, one week apart.
VISIT 1: A complete medical and psychosocial assessment will be conducted with parents and children/teens, both separately and together.
VISIT 2: Recommendations are made for Treatment Goals and a Summary Plan is presented. Education and goal-setting begins.
TOOLS FOR LIFE:
EDUCATION OF BASIC CONCEPTS
A period of time, ranging from 8 to 20 or more weeks depending on individual circumstance, where families are scheduled for visits once to twice a week. Visits occur in BLOCKS, which refer to 4-week units of service.
BLOCK 1 (order may vary):
- Week 1: One hour with dietitian
- Week 2: One hour with psychologist
- Week 2: One hour with food consultant
- Week 3: One hour with fitness trainer
- Week 4: Follow up with Dr. Rosen to design subsequent BLOCKS.
BLOCKS 2 THROUGH 4 (number of blocks will vary):
- Once a week services continue.
- Which professionals are seen, and in which order, is determined by a collaboration between the family and Dr. Rosen.
- Each block ends wtih a summary visit with Dr. Rosen.
LIVING LIFE:
ONGOING SUPPORT TO APPLY YOUR "TOOLS FOR LIFE" OVER TIME
- In many cases, affiliation with California Center for Healthy Living will be recommended to continue for a minimum of 1 to 1 1/2 years.
- At the final Tools for Life appointment, a collaborative plan will be made to decrease the frequency of services.
- Every family's ongoing affiliation with CCHL will vary according to individual circumstance.
FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS
Unfortunately, insurance reimbursement for obesity-related conditions is suboptimal. Medical complications of obesity are reimbursed, but the services that are involved in prevention and counseling time are not. For this reason, we are requesting up-front payment for services.
As a courtesy to our patients, we have a medical biller on staff to submit claims on their behalf. Reimbursement will then be steered directly to the family.
We are committed to thoroughly researching the coding information necessary to optimize the financial reimbursement for each family.

California Center for Healthy Living’s team offers comprehensive medical and psychological support for children, teens and young adults up to 25 years of age, with a wide range of needs related to:
- Overweight or obese status—or concern about possible overweight or obese status;
- Body image concerns;
- Parenting dilemmas involving the weight, health, and/ or body image of their children—how to help without harming.
Eating should be one of life’s greater pleasures. Too often in our society, the value of any given food is reduced to…”Will eating this food make me gain or lose weight?”
At CCHL, we work to restore the fundamental purposes of food: to nourish and to give pleasure. Through competent eating, weight tends to find the place it is meant to be over time.
Any diet plan that promises rapid weight loss if it is followed should be viewed as suspect… diets don’t work!!
At CCHL, we guide toward healthy eating through a non-diet approach—through the gentle encouragement of lifestyle changes coming from within the child or teen rather than from a set of rules. Changes that come from within the individual are the only ones that have a chance of lasting over the course of a lifetime.
