SOCCER: The perfect family activity
As the Winter Holidays crash upon us in a frenzy of food, shopping and holiday festivities, you do not have to limit your family’s fitness and fun. Resist the urge to lay sedentary on the couch with the family watching drab Holiday programming and scarfing down empty carbs. Let’s face it, the “winter weather” of 55-65 degrees and the occasional drizzle here in California is no excuse. To us East Coasters, we consider that a heat wave.
My favorite family activity whether it be indoor or outdoor is Soccer! My fondest childhood memories were playing soccer with my Dad and my sister. We would laugh so hard that we would always end up on the ground in stitches!
Soccer is the fastest growing sport for boys and girls in America today, thanks to the recent World Cup for both men and women. Worldwide, it is the most popular sport on the planet. It is a team sport, involving 11 players on each side who use their legs, head and torso to pass a ball and score goals. The nature of the game means that players may be sprinting, running fast or slow, and sometimes may be standing around.

Nearly 400 years after the early Plymouth Colony settlers celebrated their bountiful harvest with an elaborate 3-day feast, most of us will continue this annual tradition by joining with family and friends to reflect upon our good fortunes while indulging in a traditionally extravagant Thanksgiving meal. As the opening to a holiday season chalked full of delicious culinary temptations, the average plate of our favorite Thanksgiving standards can typically range between 1,700 to 3,000 calories; well over the recommended daily allowance (2,000) for most people. In light of this information, California Center for Healthy Living would like to suggest some helpful tips for making your Thanksgiving holiday a truly happy and healthy one:
Whether anticipating a Thanksgiving feast or just the routine dinner at home, always make sure to eat a wholesome breakfast and lunch. In addition to slowing your metabolism and causing your body to store additional calories, your elevated hunger resulting from missed meals may lead to increased and feverish overeating at dinner, as well as some unwanted grumpiness with those around you.

With an estimated 36 million trick-or-treaters between the ages of 5 and 13 in the United States, the odds are pretty good that your household might have some of these candy-hunting hopefuls. Indeed, as recent US Census data suggests Americans consume, on average, about 24½ pounds of candy per year, it’s no surprise that the heightened consumption of candy and other sugary treats has often become the sole focus of the Halloween holiday. With that said, California Center for Healthy Living would like to suggest some helpful tips for celebrating a Happy (and more healthy) Halloween:
