She has come to CCHL to learn how to feed her whole family in a healthy way that doesn’t isolate anyone from the foods they love. Follow her journey.

Do you have anxiety watching your child eat?  If so, here are a few concrete suggestions on how to help parents deal with the feelings that are often triggered in the process of feeding children.  Feeding children is often a demanding and sometimes a very stressful task.

 

Currently our cultural standards emphasize thin trim body size as the body ideal for both children and adults.    In addition, the thin fit body ideal is typically equated with good health.  If the child is overweight, blame for feeding an unhealthy or bad diet if often placed directly on the parents.    These standards apply even though they are over generalized and do not take into account the multitude of reasons why a child may be overweight.  Subsequently, many parents feel high anxiety around their children’s food intake especially when that child is overweight.

DANGERS OF LABELING OBESITY AN ‘EPIDEMIC’

There is no dispute in any circle about the alarming trend towards overweight and obesity that our nation, including its young people, has taken…the “obesity epidemic.” Take a look on any street or at any theme park and, across the board, at least a third of people are overweight or obese. Obesity-related costs are now approaching $147 billion per year, double the amount from 1998. It is widely quoted that today’s generation of children will be the first that will not outlive their parents.

As we approach the close of 2011, we once more find ourselves sharing in the anticipation, excitement and general bustle of another holiday season.  In addition to the crisp air, the traditional foods, our favorite holiday films, and our share of crowded shopping malls and parking lots, we might also be experiencing some familiar elevations in holiday-related stress.
