What’s the deal with… “The Family Meal”?

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

Ok I have to admit, when the doorbell rings my kids run to see what’s for dinner.  When my husband asks,  ”What’s for dinner?”  I look at him perplexed and ask him… what?     The theory is simple.  I know how to shop, I can follow a recipe and I love dinner conversations with my husband and kids.

The reality is… soccer practice, spontaneous play dates and life in the fast lane (as fast as it gets in the Valley).  Problem stated.

I’ve also learned that I don’t handle rejection well, so if my dinner isn’t a success, I feel like I have failed and am discouraged from putting the effort in again.  I also think grocery shopping is an extension of shampoo, rinse, repeat.  I go to the market, they eat the food, I go back.  This month I’m going to challenge myself to organize, plan and prepare two Family Meals each week.

I’m going to let my children be part of the planning and preparation process, because I do believe the more involved they become the more successful it will be.  I’m looking forward to letting my husband know what is for dinner, and am hopeful that my kids may soon associate the doorbell with a neighbor coming over, the UPS guy or on a lucky spring day…. a Girl Scout!
